Emily Cowan is a Vancouver comics artist and illustrator, who works largely within the themes of growing up, queer identity, feminism and mental health. She is passionate about creating stories for young girls; the kind of stories she wanted to read as a youth but was unable to find. She creates works that center around female leads, with little to no romantic plotlines, and day-to-day happenings that highlight the despair and restlessness that come hand-in-hand with being that age. She is fascinated by friendship, the only “optional” love-relationship in our lives that is often under-represented in media, and uses her art to explore the complexities of friend relationships. She also creates short autobiographical works, often humorous, that detail her own journeys into feminism, women’s health and sexuality/gender politics.
